PNEWFC goalkeeper Danielle Gibbons has been called up to the England squad for the Under 19s European Championship first round qualifiers, which are to be held later this month in Moldova.
Gibbons, 18, was selected to train with England last month, in a bid to impress manager Mo Marley by fighting off five goalkeepers to grab a seat on the plane, which will fly out on September 7th for the ten day trip.
The Preston shot stopper was shocked about receiving her call up; she said “To be honest, it’s surreal. I was speechless when I first found out because I really didn’t expect to be selected from the 5 goalkeepers that went to the training camp in Manchester.”
Tattianna Saunders is the other keeper in the 18 man squad, and will provide tough competition for Gibbons, as she already possesses experience at this level.
It won’t be an easy ride though for England’s young starlets, as they take on the hosts, Armenia and Finland inside a tough six days.
Gibbons has previous experience of travelling away on International duty, as she was part of the England college team that participated in the Youth World Cup in Sweden. Preston North End team mate Chantelle O’Hara was also part of the squad that competed in Gothenburg.
Gibbons said “Playing in Sweden allowed me to experience what it was like competing under pressure. So I’m sure it will help me to cope with the high expectations and perform well.”
The young North End keeper has only just recovered from a knee injury, as she landed awkwardly in pre - season, but is now ready to fight for the number one jersey, at both club and national level.
Danielle, who begins her studies at UCLan once returning home from Moldova, is looking forward to being part of the England set up under manager Marley. She said “I just want to enjoy the experience and make the most of it. Ok if I play that’ll be a brilliant bonus. I think we have a very good chance to get past the first phase.”

Two second half strikes from Curzon Ashton denied PNEWFC an opening day victory, in a game the Lilywhites should have won by half time.
North End had a strong penalty appeal turned down deep into the second half, as Sarah Berry was brought down by keeper Laura Bracewell, costing North End a point in their first group game of the FA Premier League Cup.
Preston dominated for large periods of the first half, but a disappointing second half display saw the Lilywhites concede two sloppy goals.
Manager Andy Burgess can take many positives from the performance, as attention now turns to next week’s important league fixture at home to Leeds Vixens.
North End who were missing in form striker Hannah Bailey, started the brighter of the two sides, with plenty of possession and stroking the ball around with confidence
Their first sight on Curzon’s goal was created by striker Sam Cadwallader, who was playing in a central role, with wingers Lynne Craig and Laura Walker either side of her. Cadwallader produced a nice turn to escape the tackle of Sophie Riley and elegantly played the ball over the top for Craig to narrowly fire over Laura Bracewell’s bar.
North End maintained their pressure on the Curzon back line, as Willoughby and Walker were next to test Bracewell, but unable to force the keeper into action.
Preston’s persistence finally paid off in the 27th minute, when the quick thinking of Tammy Burgess’s was to thank for the goal. North End were awarded a free kick inside their own half following a foul on Craig. Tammy Burgess spotted Walker unmarked and played a superb 45 yard pass to the winger, as the Ashton defence was fast asleep. Walker capitalised on the poor defending, by striking an unstoppable shot on the half volley to give PNEWFC the lead.
Emma Reader, who had little to do during the first half, was called into action just before the interval, as the keeper pulled off a smart save. A swerving cross by Ashton midfielder Amanda Goodwin was met by a strong punch from Reader, preventing Curzon’s equaliser as North End finished the half infront.
Ten minutes after the restart, Curzon had their equaliser in a goal which would have angered boss Andy Burgess. A foul on the edge of the 18 yard box resulted in Goodwin ambitiously driving a low shot which was too hot for Reader to handle. The PNE stopper parried the shot straight to Emma Lambelurne’s feet, who couldn’t miss from 3 yards out.
Curzon wreaked all the positives from their goal, and started to gain confidence, with Goodwin pulling all the strings from midfield.
Louise Cafferkay pulled off a brave last ditch tackle to prevent goal hero Lambelurne her second of the afternoon. The striker was through on goal, but Cafferkay tracked back well to slide in just when she was going to pull the trigger. Cafferkay was injured in the process, but fortunately for PNEWFC’s longest serving player she was able to continue.
Reader was again called into action, pulling off another magnificent save, as Patrice Shirley was through on goal, but Reader quick reactions kept the sides level.
Curzon finally punished the Lilywhites in the 70th minute, as the visitors came from behind to take the lead in this thrilling cup tie. The goal was again a sloppy one to concede on Preston’s behalf, as Reader, who was having a solid game, mishandled a shot allowing Lambelurne the easiest of chances to grab her second of the afternoon.
The major incident of the game was saved until the last few minutes, as Preston were outraged not to be awarded a penalty after Berry was alleged to have been brought down by keeper Bracewell. Berry broke into the Curzon box and after a collision with the keeper which knocked both players to the floor, Berry was first to get up but brought down once more by the goalkeeper, with the referee waving away North End claims.
Manager Andy Burgess was disappointed with the result, but found some positives from the performance. He said “We played well for the first 55 minutes until they scored but second half it wasn’t where we wanted to be. They were sloppy goals to concede and we will have to look at that. We managed to win a lot of second balls, we won a lot of individual battles too, and there are massive positives from the first half which is pleasing.”

PNE: Reader, Sherwood, Skull, Charnley, Cafferkay (O’Hara 72), Burgess, Walker, Berry, Craig (Eastwood 63), Willoughby, Cadwallader Subs: Ann- Walsh, Taberner, Wotton.
Curzon Ashton: Bracewell, Pennington, Baird, Harrup, Riley, Rodgrove, Goodwin, Lee, Hayes (Clenworth 24), Lambelurne, Shirley (Ward 75) Subs: Stanley, Maylett, Parker.

PNEWFC bounced back from their early exit at the UCLan tournament in fantastic fashion with a 12-2 drubbing of an American Touring College side. Five goals from prolific striker Hannah Bailey and a hat trick from Lynette Craig helped Preston seal a convincing win. Angela Willoughby also got on the scoresheet alongside substitutes Christina Skull and Sarah Walker for Andy Burgess’s side.
With as little as six minutes on the clock Preston took the lead as Craig grabbed the first of her three goals, but had the visitors goalkeeper to thank for the goal as she dropped the shot.
The second goal soon followed a few minutes later, as North End stamped their authority on the game when Bailey nodded in a Laura Walker cross on the goal line.
The Lilywhites were stroking the ball around with confidence, looking very positive in their play with their new look 4-3-3 formation.
PNE’s third goal which came in the 32nd minute was created by Channi O’Hara and finished off by Bailey. The move was started when Walker, who switched from right to left wing, cut inside her marker to play the ball to O’Hara, who was in acres of space. With time on her hands, O’Hara played the ball through to striker Bailey. With work still to do, Bailey skipped past her marker to slot home sealing great team goal.
Bailey’s hat trick was confirmed moments later, with another superbly taken goal proving she will be very important to her team’s ambitions this season. Holding midfielder Tammy Burgess cleared the ball following an American attack. The ball was launched deep into the oppositions half, and Bailey showed her lightning pace beating the defender to the ball and cleverly rounded the goalkeeper to tap the ball into an empty net
The goals kept flooding in as Preston made it five in the 40th minute, and Craig, who was playing on the right of a three man attack, got her second of the evening. O’Hara, who was one of very few positives from Sunday’s tournament, chipped the ball over the top of the back four, for Craig to latch onto and stroke past the American goalkeeper.
Six was the magic number as the home side were starting to show their attacking quality that saw them being one of the highest scorers in the division last season. A great delivery from winger Walker was hit on the volley with force by Bailey inside the penalty area, clipping the post before going in.
There was a shock before the half time whistle as the visitors grabbed a goal, which going off their first half performance was undeserved. Preston switched off allowing the American College team to hit them on the break, with a calmly taken finish beating keeper Emma Reader.
North End soon redeemed themselves early in the second half, as Craig sealed her hat trick in the 47th minute. Willoughby’s in swinging corner wasn’t cleared properly by the American defence allowing Craig to scramble the ball over the line.
Bailey grabbed her impressive fifth of the game in the 52nd minute making the score line 8 goals to 1. O’Hara was an integral part of the goal, showing why she was selected to represent England in the World Youth Cup in Sweden a couple of weeks ago. The attacking midfielder skilfully with the outside of the boot dinked her pass over the last defender for the run of Bailey. The speedy striker raced through on goal unchallenged to calmly stroke the ball past the keeper.
Manager Andy Burgess rang the changes in the 55th minute with goal heroes Bailey and Craig replaced.
One of the substitutes, striker Sarah Walker hit the post with her first touch of the ball. The opportunity was created as a long free kick on the half way line by full back Alison Taberner launched into the penalty area. Sarah Walker smartly turned to hit the ball first time which clipped the outside of the post, going out for a goal kick.
Even though Preston were home and dry in this pre season match, manager Burgess was stressing to his side to keep their shape and not lose concentration.
But this wasn’t the case as the Lilywhites gave away another sloppy goal which must have angered the North End management team. A Taberner throw in was not collected by centre back Vicky Charnley, as possession was nabbed by an American College forward who slammed the ball into the top right hand corner giving PNE stopper Reader no chance.
Preston soon regained their scoring boots as Sarah Walker made up for her earlier miss scoring her first of the match. Tammy Burgess won possession back in the middle of the park, with options on both wings, she decided against either to play the ball to the substitute striker who escaped the American defender. She fired a ferocious shot at the keeper, which was too hot to handle and could only parry the ball back to the feet of Preston’s number 9, who didn’t make the same mistake twice slamming the rebounded shot into the back of the net.
Willoughby made sure Preston got into double figures following an error from the visiting goalkeeper. A poor goal kick was played straight to the feet of midfielder Willoughby feet, who first time audaciously chipped the ball over the keeper in the 74th minute.
Full back Taberner, who was partly at fault for the visitors second goal, made up for her error by creating Preston’s eleventh goal. Taberner, with a great tackle won the ball for PNE on the edge of the American’s 16 yard box and played a cracking swerving cross in for Williougby to drive a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.
The rout was completed in the 85th minute, as another substitute Christina Skull got her name on the score sheet. Another Taberner set piece was causing the opposition problems, as her thunderous free kick could only be parried away. Willoughby, who was left unmarked in the penalty box, collected the loose ball to lay off Skull to side foot into the bottom right hand corner.
Manager Andy Burgess was delighted how his side reacted following their disappointment in the UCLan tournament. He said “I’m delighted, there has been a very good reaction following Sunday, we have changed the formation to 4-3-3 and it has suited us a whole lot better. It was a good work out and a lot of positives have come out of it.”
PNE: Reader, Taberner, Jones, Charnley, Eastwood, Burgess, Willoughby, O’Hara, Walker, Bailey, Craig. Subs: Ann -Walsh, Sherwood, Skull, Clayton, Cafferkey, Walker.

PNEWFC left their management with plenty of homework to do, making it to the first knockout round of the UCLAN tournament before crashing out to Derby County. Two goals from Cara Newton and one from Emily Jefferies condemned Preston an unexpected defeat and left manager Andy Burgess furious with the nature of his side’s early exit.

Sunday’s competition, held at Preston Sports Arena, was contested by some of the best teams from across the north of England and gave Burgess a first glimpse of his side’s ability against strong opposition.

Preston appeared to be the team to beat early on, easing through the group stages of the competition with a perfect record of four wins out of four, keeping a clean sheet in each of the games.

North End began with a convincing 2-0 win over Barnsley. Captain Louise Cafferkey’s thunderous long range free-kick was too hot for the goalkeeper to handle, fumbling the shot to allow the ball to trickle over the line.

Tammy Burgess was incredibly unlucky not to double Preston’s lead minutes later when her effort smashed off the frame of the goal.

With time against them, Barnsley pressed forward late on and were punished for it when ‘keeper Amy Weaver’s quick long ball allowed striker Hannah Bailey to beat the last defender and smartly chip over the Barnsley goalie.

Preston’s form continued into the next game, a 4-0 drubbing of Nottingham Forest. Cafferkey’s inswinging corner took a heavy deflection from a Forest defender and crept in. Bailey then finished off a fine team move with an ambitious curling effort from a tough angle which found the top corner. Cafferkey continued her unlikely scoring streak, rolling back the years with a darting run before unleashing an unstoppable 35 yard effort which left the ‘keeper rooted to the spot. Shelley James’ fortunate effort concluded Preston’s onslaught when he chipped effort hit the post and bounced off the goalkeeper’s back and into the net.

North End then crept past Everton with a dramatic and controversial goal at the death. Channi O’Hara’s long-range chip was pushed against the crossbar by a frantic fingertip save from the retreating ‘keeper but was poked in at the far post by Bailey unmarked and possibly offside.

The perfect record was secured with a memorable performance by Bailey in a 3-0 victory over Morecambe. The young striker converted O’Hara’s pinpoint cross before turning provider, picking out Burgess who shot low from the edge of the area. Bailey then got her fifth of the tournament with the help of some poor goalkeeping when her stinging shot from distance was mishandled by the ‘keeper and slipped in.

Preston’s early exit did not impress manager Burgess. He said: “I think we did OK during the group stages. However, when we came up against Derby in the quarter finals, we were a million miles away from where we need to be if we’re to be successful this season.”

“I’d be disappointed if we exited the competition by a single goal at that stage, but to lose 3-0, in a 24 minute game, leaves me disappointed and angry.”

Despite the loss, Burgess was able to take positives from the performances of some players. He added: “Hannah Bailey was exceptional; her work rate, desire and quality were all top draw. Lou Cafferkey also stood out, as did, in parts, Channi O’Hara. I learned an enormous amount - I learn something about someone every time we have a session.”

PNEWFC’s next game on Wednesday evening is against a touring American college team at Preston Sports Arena, and Burgess believes the game will do his side well:

“To have a game so soon after Sunday’s disappointment’s is a good thing - I just want to get back out there, and I think the players do also - at least I hope they do.”

Preston’s hot prospect goalkeeper Danielle Gibbons has received another boost after been called up to the England under 19s Training Camp next month. Gibbons, who has just recently returned from the Youth World Cup in Sweden, will be hoping to impress following an impressive tournament, in which England eventually finished third.
The 17 year old shot stopper said: “I am ecstatic, really pleased, I didn’t think I would get a chance when I didn’t hear from them after they came and watched me play. Playing in the Youth World Cup gave me the experience of playing in front a crowd, under a lot of pressure, so hopefully I can build on that and it will help me break into the England squad”.

The five day training camp will be held in Manchester from 15 - 19 August, providing Head Coach Mo Marley the opportunity to assess the new crop of England starlets. The girls will also get the opportunity to prove what they can do on the pitch, with two friendly matches organised. England under 19s lost in the European Championships finals played in Macedonia last month, falling 2-1 to France.

Gibbons wasn’t North End’s only representative out in Sweden, as midfielder Chantelle O’Hara made the trip to Scandinavia. O’Hara, who is known for her passing ability said: “Sweden was amazing, best experience of my life. I think it has improved my skill and general fitness, as it was such a high intensity. It was good to play with players who are at such a high standard.”

After cruising through their group and the knockout rounds England fell just short in the semi finals losing 2-0 to a Norwegian side.

Reflecting on her time in Sweden, goalkeeper Gibbons said: “Hands down the best week of my life, not only like to play and get third place and a bronze medal, but the whole atmosphere around Gothenburg and having such a great team spirit within the camp.”

Preston North End goalkeeper Danielle Gibbons will be gunning for glory when she takes part in the Youth World Cup in Sweden this
month.
The former Runshaw College student is among the 18-strong England Colleges squad which will be jetting out to Gothenburg on Sunday.
The youngster is England’s first choice between the sticks and will line up against the host nation in their opening group game on Monday.

Gibbons said: “I’m really looking forward to it, I can’t wait. It should be a really good experience.”
The Three Lions have been drawn in a group containing two Swedish teams and Poland, but the tournament boasts sides from footballing super powers including Spain and Argentina.

However, the 17-year-old shot-stopper is confident of success.
“I think we have got a good team and should have a good chance of winning,” she said.
Gibbons, who is off to study at the University of Central Lancashire in September, has made three appearances for England - keeping two clean sheets - after impressing in a series of trials.

She has played football since the age of 10 and currently plays for Preston North End’s women’s team.
Gibbons, who supports both North End and Chorley and gets down to Deepdale when she is not playing or working, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Lancastrian, Burnley’s Rachel Brown.
“I play for Preston and we are hoping to get promoted to the National Premier Division this season.
“My dream is to play for the England women’s senior team like Rachel.”

PNEWFC got off to a flying start in their first pre season game, with a convincing 8-0 victory away at Kettering Town Ladies. The game was played in sweltering conditions and was the first opportunity for new head coach Andy Burgess to look at his team in action.

The match was played in an unfamiliar format, with three 40 minute periods, so it would benefit both teams’ fitness levels and give all the players a run out.

From the outset Preston took control of the game, and it was noticeable that the Lilywhites would command proceedings. Captain Vikki Eastwood, who was causing Kettering full back Abigail Cartwright problems down the left wing, nearly grabbed the opener inside the first 10 minutes. Eastwood made an advanced run from left back but miss hit her cross, which in the process turned into a shot, rattling the home side’s bar.

North End retained possession well, stroking the ball around with ease in midfield but struggled to convert in front of goal with several opportunities wasted.

The deadlock was broken in the 28th minute thanks to Hannah Bailey with a superbly taken finish. Preston exposed Kettering once more down the left hand side as Eastwood played a delightful ball over the top of the defence for Bailey to latch onto. Bailey with still a lot of work to do, and under pressure from Kirsty Linnel cheekily chipped the ball over keeper Mel Pinnington to give the away side the lead.

Bailey made it two goals in as many minutes with a thunderous strike as North End started to find their rhythm. The Poppies failed to clear the ball following another Eastwood cross, and Bailey capitalised on the mistake firing an unstoppable shot under Pinnington.

The prolific striker was determined to grab that illusive first half hat trick and was unlucky not to just before the break. Bailey struck a speculative shot which narrowly went over from just outside the penalty area following a good delivery from debutant Tammy Burgess.

Head coach Andy Burgess made eight changes at the first interval with only Bailey, Jenny Wootton and goalkeeper Danielle Gibbons retaining their place.

Substitute Jess Clayton, who has come up through the ranks made a big impression when introduced. The young midfielder, who is only 16, looked very calm on the ball and certainly looks a great prospect for Preston.

Preston made it three in the 57th minute as Bailey grabbed an impressive hat trick. The goal was created from winger Laura Walker, who went on a tantalising jinxing past full back Cartwright into acres of space on the right hand side. Walker then played the ball into the box to Bailey, who got infront of her marker to tap the ball home.

The victory was ensured just before the end of the second period with potentially the goal of the game. Captain for the second period Sarah Berry drove a low shot from the edge of the 16 yard box into the bottom right hand corner following a great passing move by North End.

For the final period of the game, ex Rushden and Luton midfielder Burgess gave all the players a last run out, making substitutions at the 100 minute mark.

Lynette Craig was the scorer of the Lilywhites fifth goal as she cleverly rounded the Kettering goalkeeper to tap the ball into an empty goal.

Midfielder Chantelle O’ Hara was denied her first of the afternoon following a superb reaction save from Pinnington. O’ Hara cleverly hit the shot with the outside of her foot, 25 yards out but the keeper was equal to it to turn the ball round the post.

Number six was soon the case, as Sam Cadwallader joined Bailey, Berry and Craig on the score sheet. A quick throw in by ex Sheff Wed defender Mel Sherwood was collected by Cadwallader as she turned defender Linnel and coolly finished which any centre forward would have been proud of.

Six turned to seven as Cadwallader doubled her tally for the afternoon as she pounced on an error from Poppies goalkeeper Pinnington. The young keeper dropped an Eastwood cross and Cadwallader was quickest to react to the keeper’s mistake.

It was déjà vu two minutes later as Cadwallader and Eastwood teamed up once more to seal the victory with the seventh and Cadwallader’s hat trick goal. Unfortunately in the process of the goal, keeper Pinnington suffered a suspected broken wrist and everyone at Preston wishes her a speedy recovery.

Head coach Andy Burgess was pleased with what he saw from his team today, he said: “It is obviously going to take a bit of time for the players to get back to match fitness and match tempo but I was pleased with what I saw today, some very good individual performances and an overall good team performance. Once we got going there was some good finishing, some very well taken goals and decent play around the box. We created a fair few more chances than the score line reflects.”

Kettering: Pinnington, Lewis, Crisp - Hihn, Linnel, Chan, Cartwright, Cooper, Dwane, Penney, Cook, Lee, Rust, Griffiths, Piggolt, Wilson, Evans, Clark, Virgin, Hill.
Preston: Gibbons, Sherwood, Walker, Wootton, Eastwood, Craig, O’Hara, Burgess, Foster, Cadwallader, Bailey, Walsh, Cafferkay, Berry, Skull, Taberner, Walker, Willoughby, Clayton.

Preston North End Women FC began pre-season training on Monday ahead of the upcoming season.

The squad of senior players were introduced to new head coach Andy Burgess and put through their paces in an intensive two hour training session by his newly recruited backroom staff of first team assistant head coach John Townsend, reserve team coaches Paul Gray and Mick Taylor, fitness coach Ashley Power, goalkeeping coach Ellis Hawksworth, and development squad coach Duncan Fernhead.

Burgess also had his first opportunity to see his five new signings train with the rest of the squad. Tammy Burgess, who has played for clubs including Liverpool and Everton, striker Shelly James, Mel Sherwood and Christina Skull, both signed from Sheffield Wednesday, and highly rated Carly-Ann Walsh signed from Everton.

The management team will also cast their eye over five trialists who have been given the opportunity to prove their worth during pre-season training.

Former Rushden & Diamonds player Burgess was impressed with his team ahead of his first season with North End. He said: “It was good to get going properly, we split the squad into the first team and the reserves and the feedback I got was that everybody’s attitude was spot on, everyone worked hard and we started as we mean to go on.”

PNEWFC’s travel to Kettering on Sunday for their first pre-season friendly, and Burgess is excited to take a closer look at his players and tactics: “It’s just a case of going out there and getting a feel for playing again and being in match situations. We have a lot of players so I want to see how they gel and possibly look at formations and player positions. It will be a case of trial and error, the score does not really bother me but I would like to go down there and get a win, because winning breeds confidence.”
