On Saturday 20 August 2011 our under 16s travelled down to Coventry to take on former Centre of Excellence side Coventry City Ladies under 17s in a pre season friendly game and came away with a thoroughly deserved victory.
The Lillywhites fell behind, against the run of play, mid way through the first half after an unfortunate goalkeeping error allowed Coventry City to go one up. However, Coventry’s lead did not last long before Sophie Killip, making her debut for PNE, prodded the ball home from a corner.
North End took the lead early in the second half after great work from Natasha Roe. Roe robbed the Coventry City defence of the ball after they tried to play a short goal kick before coolly slotting home on her left foot.
Under 16s Manager Peter Millington said “Today was a great work out for both teams. I thought Coventry worked hard right up to the final whistle but I was really impressed with our players energy levels and in the second half we limited Coventry to just one corner and I don’t think the opposition managed a shot on target – so defensively I am very happy.”
“I think we dominated possession and territory and pressed really well all over the pitch to win the ball back, whenever we weren’t in possession. We now need to work on creating more scoring opportunities and this is something we can address in the remainder of the pre season friendly matches that we have before the season kicks off on 11 September.”
The Under 16s continue their pre season build up with the games against our Under 18s on Wednesday 24 August and against top Liverpool side Mersey Girls on Sunday 28 August.
